Novelista, dramaturgo y escritor satírico ruso. Formado como ingeniero naval, alternó su labor científica con su vocación literaria. Un inconformista toda su vida, fue bolchevique antes de la Revolución rusa de 1917 para luego abandonar el partido apenas este llegó al poder. Su crítica, cargada de ironía contra las posturas literarias del partido, le granjeó la enemistad de las autoridades. Su obra más ambiciosa, la novela
Nosotros (
1924; prohibida en la Unión Soviética hasta 1989), fue la primera novela antiutópica, precursora de
Un mundo feliz, de
Aldous Huxley,
y 1984, de
George Orwell.
